LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA VENICE, ITALY 2009

This site-specific installation was a commissioned project for the 2009 Venice Biennale, part of the exhibition “East West Dewan: Contemporary Art from Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.” The work featured two walls arranged in an octagonal form.

One wall was painted white and adorned with a geometric camouflage pattern in the shape of a vortex, resembling the impact marks of bullets. The opposite wall was lined with mirrors, onto which smaller vortex patterns, painted in red, were placed like wounds. When viewers looked into the mirrors, these red “wounds” were reflected onto their own bodies, with the camouflage bullet impressions visible in the background.

This powerful juxtaposition invited viewers to confront the violent imagery, encouraging reflection on the personal and collective impact of conflict and how their identities intersect with the broader context of the artwork.
