KASHMIRI SHAWL

SHARJAH ART FOUNDATION UAE 2011, VICTORIA AND ALBERT MUSEUM, LONDON 2011, DEICHTORHALLEN HAMBURG, GERMANY 2023

Kashmiri Shawl (2011) was a commissioned project for the Sharjah Biennale 2011, embodying much more than the pursuit of beauty and spirituality. The front of this monumental installation features an abstract, symmetrical, and dazzling pattern inspired by Kashmiri shawl embroideries, set against a black background. The reverse side, in striking red, reveals the meticulous process behind its creation: over 300,000 upholstery pins pushed through the shawls.

Through this work, the artist underscores the stark contrast between the global admiration for Kashmiri pashmina shawls and the relative neglect of the long-standing conflict in the occupied Jammu and Kashmir region. For her, the pursuit of beauty becomes a potent vehicle to address pressing political issues, using aesthetic allure to draw attention to deeper, unresolved tensions.
