WATER HAS NEVER FEARED THE FIRE

THE 9TH ASIA PACIFIC TRIENNIAL OF CONTEMPORARY ART QUEENSLAND ART GALLERY | GALLERY OF MODERN ART QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA 2018

Water Has Never Feared The Fire was a commissioned piece by the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA), drawing inspiration from the vast expanse of the Australian ocean. This tapestry features a striking interplay of blue and gold, depicting fish emerging from the water and ships traversing the sea. The imagery serves as a powerful commentary on the environmental degradation inflicted on marine ecosystems by commercial maritime activities.

Beyond its environmental focus, the artwork also offers a profound reflection on historical themes. It addresses the colonization and erasure of Australia’s Indigenous populations, highlighting the intertwined ecological and cultural impacts that have shaped the region’s narrative over the centuries.
