This commissioned project stems from the artist’s deep affection for sacred places that evoke the essence of Saudi Arabia. For her, the Kaaba, the Prophet’s Masjid in Medina Sharif, and the story of Zamzam hold profound spiritual significance. These elements have been integral to her spiritual and emotional journey, with the story of Zamzam being a cherished memory from her childhood.
In her commissioned projects, the artist strives to establish a meaningful connection with the places being honored. This particular project is of special importance due to the spiritual reverence she has for these holy sites. Her work is imbued with a deep sense of reverence and personal connection to these sacred locations.
The design features a blend of black, green, and water to symbolize the Kaaba, the Prophet’s Masjid, and Zamzam, respectively. She envisions a three-dimensional cylindrical structure resembling a well, reflecting the crucial role of water in desert environments like Saudi Arabia. The water, akin to Zamzam, signifies Allah’s graciousness and its boundless nature. Gold represents the sanctity and abundance associated with this water, while the water itself embodies wisdom and purity.
Externally, the cylindrical structure will display images of water and fish alongside a green carpet, integrating these sacred symbols into the design. The green areas in the tapestry will depict carpets within carpets, while the fish will transition from silver water to gold water, symbolizing a garden.
A 24-inch entrance will invite viewers into the cylindrical, well-like structure, which will also evoke the feeling of a tent. Inside, the space will be predominantly black, adorned with gold and silver fur created from steel pins. From the outside, the structure will appear embroidered with gold and silver, while the interior will feature a fur-like texture. Entering the tapestry will create the sensation of immersing in water, with water imagery surrounding the entrance.
Additionally, a sound shower within the tapestry will offer the auditory experience of water and a vocal piece composed by the artist. This soundscape, which draws from her South Asian classical vocal training and Sufi poetry, will be audible only inside the tapestry, enhancing the immersive and meditative experience. Through this project, the artist aims to provide not only a visual spectacle but also a profound meditative journey.
